Exterior and site lighting
This category also holds the fixtures that sit outside the building envelope: light poles for parking areas and driveways, wall-mounted lanterns for facades and entrances, and bollard-style fixtures for paths. Exterior lighting families are usually placed on a topographic surface or a face-based host rather than a ceiling, so check the host type before loading — a ceiling-hosted fixture will not place on a site plan. Mounting height matters more outdoors than indoors, since it drives both the photometric spread and the pole schedule, so set it as an instance parameter where the family allows it.
Organising electrical content in your model
Lighting fixtures, electrical equipment and annotation symbols belong to different Revit categories, and keeping them straight is what makes power and lighting plans schedule cleanly. Fixtures on the Lighting Fixtures category carry a light source and appear in lighting schedules; motors and panels sit on Electrical Equipment; and symbols are annotation families that live in views rather than in 3D. If a family shows up in the wrong schedule, the category assignment inside the family is almost always the reason. For circuiting, confirm the family has electrical connectors defined before relying on it for load calculations.
