Native Revit stairs are system families you build with the Stair by Component tool, which is fine for standard flights but slow when you need a sculptural spiral or a prefabricated metal unit — that is exactly where a ready-made loadable family saves the afternoon.

Riser, tread and headroom before you place anything

A staircase that looks right in 3D can still fail a code check, so verify the numbers before committing. Riser and tread dimensions must stay consistent across the flight — most codes cap riser height and set a minimum tread depth, and the relationship between them is what makes a stair comfortable rather than merely legal. Headroom is the constraint people forget: you need clear vertical space above the nosing line the whole way up, and it is usually the floor opening above, not the stair itself, that causes the failure. Landings need at least the width of the flight, and more where the stair changes direction. Note that a stair delivered as a loadable family may sit on the Generic Model or Specialty Equipment category rather than the Stairs category, which means it will not appear in a stair schedule or generate an automatic path of travel — check this if your documentation depends on it.

Why can’t I edit a downloaded stair like a native Revit stair?
Native stairs are system families created with the Stair by Component tool. A downloaded loadable family is a component, so you edit it in the Family Editor rather than through stair sketch mode.

Do the stairs include handrails?
Some families include integrated railings; others are the flight only. Handrails are available separately in the linked category.
