How to Validate a Family Before It Touches Your Project

Loading the first family a search returns is how models get corrupted. Five checks, in order, catch nearly everything:

  1. Version. Every download should state the Revit version it was saved in. Revit upgrades families forward automatically and never backward — a 2024 family works in 2026; a 2026 family won’t open in 2024.
  2. Preview before loading. Open it in BIMviewer.org — geometry, parameters, and detail level visible in the browser, no Revit needed and nothing touching your model yet.
  3. The parametric test. In a scratch project, change a basic dimension in the type properties. If the geometry breaks or the family silently ignores it, that’s your answer.
  4. File size and detail. A chair shouldn’t weigh 15 MB. Check that fine geometry lives at fine detail level only, and that coarse plans stay clean.
  5. Schedule data. Do the type parameters you’ll schedule (dimensions, materials, marks) exist as proper parameters, or as text baked into the name? The former schedules itself; the latter doesn’t.

Organizing a Library Your Team Can Trust

The difference between “a folder of downloads” and a library is discipline:

  • Structure by Revit category, mirroring the Project Browser — Doors, Windows, Furniture, Lighting Fixtures — so the library reads the same way the model does.
  • Tag the version in the folder or file name. Mixed-version teams are where forward-only compatibility bites.
  • One approved copy per family. Duplicates with slightly different names are the root of most “why are there three of these” schedules.
  • Purge before saving any family back to the library — unused types and materials are dead weight every future project inherits.
